What Happens If My Internet Goes Out? Backup Options for FasCard and FLEX RF

November 15, 2025 | FasCard

It’s a fair concern. FasCard and FLEX RF are powerful, cloud-connected systems, and like any connected technology, they rely on a working Internet connection to perform at their best. The good news is: with the right setup, you’re far from helpless when an outage happens.

Why Internet Reliability Matters for Laundry Payments

Systems like FasCard and FLEX RF use the Internet to:

  • Authorize credit and debit card transactions
  • Sync data to the cloud for reporting
  • Communicate with mobile apps and loyalty accounts
  • Provide remote visibility and management for store owners

When the Internet is offline, that communication path is disrupted. Without a plan, your store could lose the ability to take card payments, which directly impacts revenue and customer experience.

That’s why CCI has built in multiple layers of protection to keep you operating, even when your primary Internet doesn’t cooperate.

Layer 1: Cellular Backup (Your First Line of Defense)

The most important step you can take to protect your FasCard or FLEX RF system is to install a cellular backup.

CCI offers an affordable cellular backup option — typically around $15 per month to operate — that provides an automatic safety net when your main Internet connection fails.

How cellular backup works:

  • Your FasCard or FLEX RF system is connected to both your primary Internet and a cellular modem.
  • If the primary Internet connection drops, the system automatically switches over to the cellular network.
  • Transactions continue to flow, machines still start, and customers keep doing laundry without interruption.
  • When your main connection comes back online, the system automatically fails back to the primary Internet.

Your customers won’t notice anything. From their perspective, the store “just works.”

Behind the scenes, CCI can also send you email notifications (if you have alerts enabled) to let you know:

  • When your system has switched to cellular backup
  • When it has returned to your primary Internet connection

That means you’re always in the loop, even if you’re not physically in the store.

Layer 2: Offline Mode (Optional Extra Protection)

In addition to cellular backup, CCI offers a feature called Offline Mode for FasCard and FLEX RF.

This is not enabled by default, because there is some risk involved — but in certain environments, it can be a valuable layer of protection.

What Offline Mode does:

  • If your Internet is down and your cellular backup fails (or you don’t have one installed), Offline Mode allows the system to continue accepting credit cards.
  • While in Offline Mode, the system does not verify in real time whether each card is good or bad.
  • Instead, it temporarily approves transactions and stores them.
  • Once Internet connectivity is restored, the system attempts to process all of those stored transactions.

As you might imagine, there is some risk here: a small number of those cards could be declined later when the system finally checks them with the processor. However, in practice, most laundromats do not see unusually high decline rates, so the risk is usually manageable.

One important point: your customers are not notified that the store is in Offline Mode. They don’t suddenly “know” they can try a bad card. The experience is the same as a normal day in your store.

Are Cellular Backup and Offline Mode Right for You?

To recap, here’s how to think about your protection layers:

  • Cellular backup: Your primary defense. Low cost, automatic failover, seamless for customers. Highly recommended for any FasCard or FLEX RF installation.
  • Offline Mode: An optional, extra layer that allows you to continue accepting cards even when all connectivity is lost. Involves some risk, but usually low, and can prevent revenue loss during extended outages.

With both options properly configured, CCI systems provide strong protection against Internet outages. The key is making sure these features are:

  • Installed correctly
  • Enabled where appropriate
  • Tested so you know they’re working before you need them

A Simple Checklist for Store Owners

If you’re currently running FasCard or FLEX RF, here’s a quick checklist:

  • ✔ Do I have a CCI-approved cellular backup installed and active?
  • ✔ Have I verified that failover to cellular works as expected?
  • ✔ Do I have email notifications enabled so I know when my system switches to backup?
  • ✔ Have I talked to CCI support about whether Offline Mode makes sense for my store?
  • ✔ Do I understand the risks and benefits of enabling Offline Mode?

If you’re unsure about any of the above, you’re not alone — and you don’t have to guess. Our support team is happy to walk you through checking your setup and confirming everything is functioning correctly.

Need Help Reviewing Your Backup Setup?

If you already have a CCI system and you’re worried that your backup protections aren’t configured correctly, or you’re not sure whether Offline Mode is enabled, we encourage you to contact our support team.

We can help you:

  • Confirm that your cellular backup is installed and working
  • Test failover so you know what to expect during an outage
  • Review whether Offline Mode is a good fit for your store

Internet outages are a fact of life — but lost revenue and frustrated customers don’t have to be.
