Lately, I’ve been reflecting on the years I’ve spent in this industry and the people I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside. One thing I’ve always enjoyed doing is observing successful people—looking at the traits they share and trying to incorporate those traits into my own life and business.
Because there are so many entrepreneurs out there who know they want to be in business for themselves—even if they’re still figuring out exactly which business—I thought I’d share a few of the core traits I believe are critical to success. Not just in laundromats, but in any business.
For me, it really comes down to three things.
I am very routine-based. I do the same things every single day. I even eat the same foods most days.
That consistency matters.
Whether it’s work projects, relationship building, exercise, or personal development, persistence pays off. Showing up every day and doing the work—even when the progress feels slow—is what ultimately creates results.
This one goes hand in hand with persistence.
Nothing worth building happens overnight. You have to put the work in, stay persistent, and then be patient enough to trust the process.
In my experience, success rarely happens on the timeline you want it to. But when persistence and patience work together, goals eventually come through.
I believe empathy is an often overlooked but incredibly important trait for business owners.
Being empathetic means being able to see situations from both sides—whether you’re looking at a decision through your customer’s eyes or trying to understand a challenge from an employee’s perspective.
I’m certainly not perfect at this, but making the effort to understand the other side has helped me see the full picture more clearly and make better decisions.
Empathy strengthens relationships, improves communication, and ultimately leads to better outcomes for everyone involved.
Persistence. Patience. Empathy.
Those are the three traits I believe matter most for small business owners. They’ve served me well over the years, and they continue to shape how I approach both business and life.
