Are Laundry Card Systems Secure?

February 4, 2026 | Business

When people ask if card systems are secure, they’re usually concerned about the data on the card itself.

What Data Is Actually Stored on a Laundry Card?

Customers load value onto their laundry card, and that value has to be retrieved in order to start machines or process transactions. So it’s reasonable to ask: Where is that data stored?

At CCI, all of our systems use centralized data. We do not store personal information on the physical card.

That means:

  • No name
  • No balance
  • No points
  • No personal information

The only thing on the card itself is a number.

How This Compares to Credit Cards

This approach is very similar to how credit cards work.

Your Visa or Mastercard doesn’t actually store your balance, credit limit, or transaction history on the card. That information lives securely in a centralized database.

The card itself is simply an identifier.

Our laundry card systems work the same way.

What Happens If a Card Is Lost?

If a laundry card is lost, the data isn’t lost.

You’re only losing the card number—not the account itself. Because all balances and data live in the system database, it’s very easy to reassign that account to a new card.

This is a key security advantage.

Why Storing Data on the Card Can Be Riskier

There are some products on the market that store more information—such as balances—directly on the card.

Those systems can be more vulnerable because a physical card can potentially be manipulated. In theory, someone with the right technical skills could attempt to alter the data on the card itself.

While that kind of tampering is unlikely, it’s still a greater risk than centralized data storage.

The Bottom Line on Security

Security is something everyone should think about—but in practice, it’s not a major concern with properly designed systems.

Our systems are secure, customer data is protected, and there’s nothing to worry about.
